WHAT PATIENTS WANT TO KNOW

 Frequently Asked Questions

  • Video Testimonial | Pellet Insertion Animation

What are the benefits of hormone pellet therapy?

    Potential benefits of testosterone:

    • More energy

    • Better libido

    • Improved sense of well-being

    • Better short-term memory

    • Improved bone density

    • Potential benefits of estradiol:

    • Eliminate hot flashes and night sweats

    • Smooth out mood swings

    • Help anxiety and irritability

    • Cardiovascular protection

    • Protect against colon cancer

    Is hormone pellet therapy new?

Not at all – this approach has been in medical use since the 1940s.

What hormones are used in the pellets?

Only bioidentical hormones are used in the pellets, either testosterone only (men and premenopausal women) or estradiol and testosterone (appropriate menopausal women).

How often do I need to have the pellet insertion procedure?

Women typically can go 4 months between pellet insertions, while men can usually go

    for 6 months.

How do the pellets release the hormones?

This is not like a shot of medicine. Your body develops a micro-blood supply around the pellets, making them behave like ovaries or testicles, where the hormone goes into the blood stream in micro-dosing, based on your body’s needs.

Are there any risks to the procedure?

The pellet insertion procedure takes a few minutes in the office. Because there is a small skin incision (not big enough to need a stitch – it heals with a special bandage), there is a rare chance of infection or bleeding. On occasion, in some individuals the pellets will extrude (come out) between insertion procedures. We are usually able to figure out why this happened and prevent it from happening again. Some pain at the insertion site usually resolves within a few days after the pellet insertion.

Are there any risks or side effects to the hormones?

In my medical opinion, there are no risks of medical adverse effects on your health from bioidentical hormone therapy, including pellet therapy (please see drlizmd.com/blog for much more on this topic). Common side effects may include, for women using testosterone: some acne or facial hair growth, or some water retention initially (which tends to resolve as more muscle develops). Risks vs. benefits, and side effects, are discussed in detail prior to the hormone pellet insertion to make sure you are a good candidate for this approach.

  • In 2008, I personally used the Optavia program and lost 15 pounds in 5 weeks. I have used this program since then to coach patients in reaching and staying at their desired weight.

I kept the weight off until the pandemic, then joined the many people who gained weight at that time. By re-engaging with the basics of this program, I easily brought myself back to where I feel good in my body.

If you have tried to lose weight and failed, then you are not alone. We are surrounded by fast food options on every corner, poor eating habits, a general lack of activity, high stress environments, insufficient sleep, and a sick-care health system.

Optavia offers a simple solution to this unsupportive environment:

    - high-quality, medically formulated meal replacements

    - free coaching support by me, a medical doctor, and my trained team

    - a community of warm, like-minded people providing real-time encouragement

    - the Habits of HealthTM Transformational System (easy steps to a sustainably healthy lifestyle)

Click here to take the Health Assessment to see if this program might be a fit for you.

You can learn more about the program here, but *please* reach out to us to get started so we can guide you to get all the free goodies included in an initial order.
